Welcome to Pharmacy Faculty Northamptonshire

The Pharmacy Faculty for Northamptonshire Integrated Care System is made up of multiple providers of Pharmacy Services.

With Maxine Foster, Integrated Care System Chief Pharmacist as Chair, and Philippa Jones, Principal Pharmacist for General Practice Alliance as Deputy Chair.

All of the partners listed below are members of the ICS (integrated Care System) for Pharmacy in Northamptonshire.

These services cover Secondary Care, Primary Care, Mental Health Services and Community Services; and all have one thing in common, the desire to improve the resilience of the Pharmacy Workforce across the System.

Pharmacy team at Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust

Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) is a Mental Health and community services trust committed to making a difference for you with you.

Each day we deliver many of the NHS services people in Northamptonshire receive in the community at home, work or in schools. We offer more than 100 services including mental health, community nursing, sexual health, physiotherapy and a range of others including specialty services. We also work in partnership across the county to deliver care together in an integrated way.

The Trust employs more than 5,000 staff who contribute to providing dedicated healthcare for our patients both in hospital and in the community.

The NHFT clinical pharmacy service is delivered by pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working across all areas of the trust including mental health, community hospitals and specialist palliative care. We also have specialist pharmacists working in community mental health teams, learning disability community services and the HIV service. The pharmacy supply service is provided by our 3rd party partner freeing up our clinical team to focus on the patients at ward and clinic level.

Pharmacy team at Northampton General Hospital

Pharmacy team at Kettering General Hospital

Kettering General Hospital provides acute healthcare services for the people of North Northamptonshire and South Leicestershire.

We employ around 4,000 staff and are one of the largest employers in Northamptonshire.

Basic facts and figures
We are a busy Hospital site and see:

  • 255 patients per day in A&E;
  • 310,000 outpatients each year;
  • About 41,500 inpatients;
  • About 43,500 day case patients;
  • Approx 3,500 births.

Pharmacy services
In our modern, automated department we have a number of different staff working within the team.

Pharmacists
Registered healthcare professionals with the Royal Pharmaceutical Council. Our Pharmacists can be in rotational, specialist or managerial posts.

Our aim is to train all our senior Pharmacists to become prescribers.

Pharmacy Technicians
Registered healthcare professionals with the Royal Pharmaceutical Council. The majority of our technicians are in clinical, medicines management positions who provide support to 

patients, nurses, doctors, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals around medication.

Pharmacy Support Workers and Assistants Our support workers work both within the pharmacy and in ward based clinical services.

Admin team
We have a team of over 100 staff, who all have varied roles. Our aseptics department produce and supply chemotherapy to our patients.

Pharmacy team at St Andrews Healthcare

St Andrew's is a mental health Charity, and our purpose is to inspire hope.

We work in partnership with NHS, voluntary, academic and research organisations to deliver specialist inpatient and community mental healthcare services. Our expertise, together with education and research, helps to improve the lives of people with complex mental health needs.

The St Andrew’s Pharmacy is based at our Northampton site. It provides a comprehensive pharmacy service including medicines procurement, dispensing, medicines management ward services and clinical input to inpatients at our Northampton, Birmingham, and Essex Hospitals.

The team includes specialist Clinical Mental Health Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Assistants who work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary teams to support the safe and effective use of medicines. We offer training and development to our team to support them in the delivery of high-quality specialist care.

Pharmacy team at Northamptonshire ICB

The Integrated Care Board (ICB) is a statutory body responsible for local NHS services, functions, performance, and budgets. Medicines are the most common healthcare intervention and account for 15-20% of Northamptonshire ICB expenses.

The prescribing and medicines management team at the ICB are a team of pharmacy professionals, dietitians, a continence nurse, and support staff who facilitate medicines optimisation across Northamptonshire. This includes prescribing advice and guidance to health and care professionals after review of clinical records or audit, predominantly in GP practices and care homes.

The team also provides clinical and commissioning input to community pharmacy and integration to medicines optimisation within secondary care providers. The teams’ remit includes medicines safety and governance, antimicrobial stewardship and medicines commissioning for high-cost therapies.

Our lead ICS Pharmacist chairs the Pharmacy Faculty for Northamptonshire, collaborating with our partners to ensure a fulfilled pharmacy workforce that matches the requirements of the Northamptonshire system now and in the future.

Pharmacy Team for Primary Care Networks

There are 16 Primary Care Networks across Northamptonshire covering over 776,000 patients. PCNs build on existing primary care services and enable greater provision of proactive, personalised, coordinated and more integrated health and social care for people close to home. Pharmacists working at primary care fulfil a variety of roles from providing reactive same day access and assessment of patients through to proactive reviews of patients who will benefit from in depth review of their medication. Pharmacy technicians within the PCNs also fulfil a range of roles from supporting practices with risk management relating to medication to reviewing patients’ medication. The pharmacy teams work together to improve prescribing, provide additional capacity in practices.

Some of these PCNs are represented by Federations such as, 360 Care Partnership in North Northamptonshire and General Practice Alliance in West Northamptonshire, who also contribute to the work of the faculty.

 

General Practice Alliance (GPA) 

General Practice Alliance (GPA) is the collaboration and linking of GP practices in Northampton to preserve, sustain and develop the local health economy. We aim to support the interests of our member Practices in Northampton, as well as ensuring patients get the best possible care equitably in the town.

One of the services GPA offers is the pharmacy service, which constitutes of a team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working in GP practices, carrying out a range of roles and responsibilities from structured medication reviews (SMRs) to high-risk drug monitoring, advice around medication processes and care home support.

We offer a range of opportunities both as an organisation and via our strong links with the Northampton Faculty, ranging from work experience, pharmacy technician apprentice posts, undergraduate and foundation placements, to both pharmacy technician and pharmacist substantive posts. Our principal pharmacist helps lead the pharmacy faculty, as vice chair.

Pharmacy team at 360 Partnership, in conjunction with NHFT

Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) is an integrated primary care and mental health Trust, providing physical, mental health and specialty services in both hospital settings and out in the community. We focus on delivering care to our patients that is as easy to access as possible. The primary care network pharmacy team work across Northamptonshire within the 3Sixty Care Partnership’s Primary Care Networks

The 3Sixty Care Partnership is a unique joint venture between a federation of 27 GP practices in Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough and East Northants and Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The team works alongside a multitude of healthcare professionals to support the safe and effective prescribing of medicines, in the form of medication reviews, medications audits,

3Sixty are working together with the five Primary Care Networks (PCNs), by bringing together health and care professionals to support them to deliver joined-up services, which we believe will lead to better quality care, better patient satisfaction and better outcomes.
