Obesity Pathway Innovation Programme (OPIP)

NHS Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) and NHS Northamptonshire Integrated Care Boards have been awarded £8 million through the Government's Obesity Pathway Innovation Programme (OPIP)* to develop new neighbourhood-based obesity services for adults, children and young people.

The programme will help bring support closer to home by developing local services that make it easier for people to access the right care in their communities. It will also help tackle health inequalities by focusing support where it is needed most.

Six neighbourhood services will be developed across LLR and Northamptonshire. The first areas selected are:

  • Charnwood
  • East Northamptonshire

Additional neighbourhoods will be introduced in phases across Leicester, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

*Independent grant funding has been provided by Eli Lilly and Company Limited in addition to the funding contributed by the Department for Science Innovation and Technology. The programme is being delivered through Innovate UK.

Is the service available now?

No. The new services are currently being designed and are not yet open for patient referrals. We kindly ask patients not to contact their GP practice to request access at this stage.

What support will be available?

Services will be designed with local communities and may include:

  • Healthy lifestyle support
  • Nutrition advice
  • Physical activity programmes
  • Family support
  • Psychological support
  • Social prescribing
  • Digital tools and support
  • Community-based interventions
  • Weight management medication services where clinically appropriate
