Palliative and end of life care
Find out what palliative and of life care is available
Palliative care services play a vital role in supporting the Northamptonshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) strategy by ensuring that individuals with life-limiting conditions receive compassionate, person-centred care that respects their dignity and values.
These services align closely with the shared vision of helping people to enjoy good health and wellbeing, while accessing high-quality, integrated support when needed. By focusing on comfort, quality of life, and emotional and social support, palliative care helps reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and prolonged stays, particularly for older adults.
This supports the ICB’s aims to improve population health, reduce health inequalities, and enable people to age well, remain independent for longer, and be valued for who they are. Integrating palliative care into community settings also ensures timely, coordinated care that aligns with people’s wishes, reinforcing the commitment to working better together across health and social care services.
The Integrated Care Board (ICB) in Northamptonshire is actively working in partnership with health, social care, and VCSE sector providers to deliver high-quality, compassionate, and person-centred palliative and end-of-life care. Aligned with the national framework Ambitions for Palliative and End of Life Care 2021–2026 and the NHS Long Term Plan, the ICB is focused on ensuring timely access to coordinated care that reflects individuals’ wishes, irrespective of diagnosis or place of residence.
Services are being commissioned across the county to meet varying levels of need, including bereavement support, with an emphasis on reducing health inequalities and enabling more people to die in their place of choice. In line with the Health and Care Act 2022, palliative and end-of-life care is being firmly established as a core part of the integrated care offer.
